Good Kill is the tardy high technical school parable from music director Andrew Niccol , substantially known for scifi picture GATTACA and In Time . When we can make warfare from our backyard , we invite the war into our everyday life in a way that is less deadly for American soldiers — but still just as emotionally devastating for them and their families . And that ’s because even when killing bechance at a distance , it ’s still kill . particularly when the optics on those drones are so good that the cowcatcher can see the children they ’ve incidentally killed in a disadvantageously - time strike .
Good Kill is at time hokey , and its messages so obvious that they can experience more like openhanded propaganda than storytelling . And yet there are moments of realism and brainwave that make it worth thinking about . Because in this film , Niccol makes us take in that drones are n’t desensitizing soldier to state of war , or turning warfare into a far - away phantasy videogame . Instead , drone war destroys the rubber of nursing home . Nothing will ever a homefront again , when war can be fought from anywhere , at any time .
TL;DR : This movie has one great idea , which is that drone strikes do n’t make state of war more distant and remote , but rather brings state of war more deeply into our life . Still , a lot of the film is cheesy and cliched , and the character arcs are pretty predictable . See it on Netflix if you eff Ethan Hawke or Andrew Niccol , but otherwise it ’s probably not worth it .
