Escape from Planet Earth ’s chief timbre is that it ’s 90 minutes long . Its 2d lineament is that it does not at any point act Smash Mouth ’s “ All - mavin . ” Oh , it wants to . Desperately . It much screams it from every frame of it ’s unusually in effect enough CG . But it bang that to use it would go out the movie horribly , and this is a film whose desire to float the right way in the middle of the mainstream is fervid , almost maniacal .
Gary Supernova ( voiced by Rob Corddry ) is a spicy , nebbish exotic from the planet Baab who works as a Mission Control operator , and is always in the phantasma of his heroic , none - too - burnished , but boundlessly more popular crony Scorch ( Brendan Fraser , whose motto “ Scorch me , baby ! ” never stops sound vaguely intimate ) . evidently , Gary is too cautious and timid to be admired by Scorch , his boss , or even his kid Kipp , who idolizes Scorch to Gary ’s obvious dismay . Even Gary ’s loving married woman Kira ( Sarah Jessica Parker ) seems to have long accepted her husband ’s inability to do .
Gary and Scorch buttocks heads when Scorch is assign to bring down “ the Dark Planet , ” from which no extraterrestrial has ever returned ( three hypothesis which major planet it is ) . Gary wants to design , but Scorch takes off , land at a 7 - 11 ( in the most rank but hardly solitary product placement in the picture show ) and captured by the evil General Shanker ( voiced by William Shatner , whose presence itself is clearly supposed to constitute gales of laughter from the audience ) . In received kids flick procedure , Gary go to deliver Scorch , meets some wacky aliens voiced by comedian , discover Shanker ’s evil plot to shoot down all extraterrestrial being , and saves the day . Kira and Kip have their own daring deeds to perform , thanks to Gary ’s evil boss ( Jessica Alba ) , who is in cahoots with Shanker for reasons too dumb to mention . It all proceeds with the efficiency of one of those pegboard , where all the pegs are round but all the golf hole are , too .
There are only three surprises in the film : the first is the vastly overqualified articulation shape . The 2d is that while you ’d expect there to be a moral about nous being better than brawn , as Gary succeeds where his over - muscled brother failed , it does n’t – - it seems to be promoting the idea that thinking actually holds a hero back from acting . Last , it ’s odd that the movie centre on an actual begetter rather than a kid ; it ’s like the film is saying , “ hey , kids , your pa may be a drag , but … he could theoretically be a hero if he ever drive the ball . ”
As such , parents of children who can bear themselves will probably not regret taking their kids to see Escape from Planet Earth . parent used to the sly , subtle humor and circumstantially rich picture of Pixar and Dreamworks ’ upright film might have some regrets , as Escape aims to do nothing more than keep the little one occupied for an 60 minutes and a half . Parents with nipper who ca n’t keep quiet in theater would credibly do better to just put How to trail Your Dragon in the DVD role player at plate , or another movie that pop the question more excitement and characters shaver can get indue in . Even Shrek would figure out , although then you ’d still have to pick up “ All - adept . ”
