I enjoy in no small amount of irony at the title card declaring this film is from the studio that brought you the CGI Lion King ( the 2019 version ) that was badly find by critic , and deem passable enough for a family audience . But with some real cast members on set , Pinocchio is an opportunity for Disney to show off its ability to combine living and live - activeness . While that could lead to a more exciting last product , put the existent - life Tom Hanks next to anthropomorphized CG versions of Jiminy Cricket and Honest John does n’t feel like it ’s doing either mass medium any favour . More significantly , the musical theme of receive to watch the scene where those real youngster turn into CG donkeys hybrids — a scene alreadycompletely terrifyingwhen it was done solely in 2D animation — could mail this version of Pinocchio into truly misrepresented soil . And let ’s not forgetGuillermo del Toro ’s stop - movement adaptation of thefolk taleis also set to release in December of this year .
