Director Matt Reeves was not mess around when he madeDawn of the Planet of the Apes . He wipes out most of the human race before the title plug-in , then unfurls a powerful story of two fight society destined for war despite having every potential chance at peace . It ’s black . It ’s bold . It ’s bloody fantastic .
Next week , Fox will releaseKingdom of the Planet of the Apes , a novel filmset in the legendary franchisethat began in 1968 with Planet of the Apes . Kingdom is a subsequence to a trilogy of film that start out in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes , which we revisited last week . Next week , we ’ll review the third plastic film , War for the Planet of the Apes , as well as the novel one . And now , we ’ll retain our look back with Dawn .
Released three years after Rise of the Planet of the Apes , Dawn takes the series to a whole new level thematically and dramatically . It ’s more complex narratively , more interesting subtextually , and eerily poignant for a post - apocalyptical film . That ’s all enhanced by sensational VFX work as well as a fantastical human cast too , with Gary Oldman and Keri Russell being two of the biggest names . It picks up the story during the credits of Rise , as we see how the deadly to man , but helpful to ape substance ALZ-113 spread across the globe . News footage include that of former presidents let out a shocking face at how humanity crumbled due to self - inflicted disease , killing the large majority of the population in the process .

Or , at least , that ’s what the anthropoid think . Ten year after the effect of the first film , Caesar ( Andy Serkis ) and his ape friends have created an intact human beings for themselves in the woods outside of San Francisco . Caesar has a wife , a Word , a newborn baby on the way , and we see that the apes have n’t seen or discover from a human in two class . What we learn though is that in that meter , immune mankind in the area have all congregated together in the city . With resources drying up , they formulate a plan to restore power , and perhaps order , by tapping into an abandoned dam . A stumble to the dekameter leads to a chance trial - in between humans and the ape lodge , an event that set forth with blow , morph to venerate , and then evolve into opportunity .
Jason Clarke plays Malcolm , a well-thought-of member of the human chemical group who leads the investigation into restoring the dam . After meeting the apes , he ’s one of the few who does n’t immediately view them as enemies . or else , he see chance . Malcolm fights the leader Dreyfus ( Gary Oldman ) to be given a chance to broker peace with the ape which , eventually , slackly , works out .
Once humans learn the apes are thriving , and vice versa , Dawn of the Planet of the Apes gets drenched in a unequaled , queasy latent hostility . As the audience , we require everyone to work it all out . The problem is there ’s so lilliputian trust between the species , and with both thinking almost solely of themselves , the mass of the film is filled with painful frustration as we catch all the close Miss for a heartsease that would ’ve changed the class of history .

Of course , we also know that finally Earth becomes Planet of the Apes — so this was never cash in one’s chips to work out . But Reeves tells such a fantastic line of latitude story that he propose peradventure that was n’t always inevitable . Dawn shows how the selection of one or two bad apple correct in motion a domino effect lead to that new public . It in truth is a Dawn .
Tension and desire drive a movie that is relatively devoid of large action for bombastic chunks of its run prison term . Things escalate by the end , and there are import dissipate throughout , but most of the flick is fuel by our fascination with how these two societies , so alike and yet so unlike , just ca n’t get along .
There ’s so much to call out as incredible in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes . The carrying into action of the doer playing the apes , for one . Toby Kebbell as the malefic Koba is arresting . Nick Thurston as Caesar ’s conflict Word Blue Eyes is remarkable . Judy Greer as Caesar ’s wife Cornelia is heartrending . And them set against this gravid human cast , using the fantastic script , directed attractively , is a sight to behold .

In terms of a rewatch , our enceinte takeaway from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes were that it ’s somehow even more magnificent than its already fantabulous predecessor . Mainly though , it ’s that the floor of these ape is so captivating on its own , you almost forget that as the apes were living their life , humanity was also trying to survive . humanity did n’t get laid extremely smart ape were thriving just outside the urban center . All they knew was a computer virus dubbed “ the Simian Flu ” by the medium wiped out almost everyone on Earth . The few who survived struggle mightily to re-start society and , in this celluloid , get pretty close to doing so . But much as human avaritia facilitated the pernicious computer virus , our same bad characteristics make it unacceptable for there to be peace on both side . As a answer , as we ’ll see in the next few films , human society was doomed right then and there , thanks to the events here .
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is nowstreaming on Hulu and Disney+ . Next up : state of war for the Planet of the Apes .
