The runway success of theHigh Linehas trigger off voguish rail - to - lead conversions across the nation . Now D.C. is offering its own bend : A park on a twain of decommissioned freeway that crosses the Anacostia River . Maybe they ’ll call it the “ Highway Line . ”
The 11th Street Bridge was ramp up after World War II and became part of the 695 Freeway , until expansion plans required three extra spans to be construct alongside the bridge . With the span ’s piers still standing , a group envisioned that the former roadway could be transform into a linear parkland .
In accession to open space , the parking area will also offer better transportation connections , because walkers and bikers will no longer be required to compete with driver on a busy roadway . And a parking lot would also do something that a freeway could not : the reclaimed open space will plug into the thriving Navy Yard on one side of the bridge with Anacostia , one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city .
Because it ’s much wider than the High Line ’s railway trestle — the total area is about three football force field — and will connect to be green space on either side of the span , the possibilities are more unresolved for how to project and programme the park .
Acompetitionwill be launched after this spring to fancy the place ’s future tense , and fundraising has already begun to accumulate the estimated $ 25 million , plus talent , for twist .

With our bridge show their eld and freeways being removed as part of community improvements throughout the land , peradventure we ’ll see a mint more of these type of analogue parks . Asimilar proposalis currently making the round here in Los Angeles for a bridge that is being supplant due to morphologic issues , but where the old span could easily stand bike and pedestrian traffic . The metropolis has not backed the project just yet , but maybe D.C. ’s success will spur them along . [ Next City ]
