Tom Cruise ’s new motion-picture show , The Mummy , is essentially a goliath movie Iron Man ; it ’s the first picture show in Universal ’s raw cinematic universe of monstrosity , which will let in Frankenstein , the Invisible Man , and other revulsion from the studio ’s racy , historic past . Here ’s the breakdown of everything The Mummy can tell us about the Dark Universe to amount .
1) They already have a logo
You ’ve got to admire the balls of The Mummy . Before the movie start , after the standard Universal logo , the above Dark Universe logo plays , announce straight - up to the audience that this movie is the beginning of a share cosmos of films . That is , if you sympathize what “ Dark Universe ” entails , which surely a bang-up many hoi polloi just depend to check out the new Tom Cruise flick , did not .
2) There are many mysteries already found
As the film begins , we match Henry Jekyll ( Russell Crowe ) in a mysterious tomb below London . While down there , in voiceover , he explain that he ’s uncover many mysteries in the past but this may be his greatest one yet . What ’s down there ? As for those other mysteries he ’s peach about , they could presumptively be study in the other motion picture .
3) What in the dark universe is Prodigium?
Jekyll extend a chemical group call Prodigium , which we slowly realise is like the Universal Monsters version of S.H.I.E.L.D. They ’re a privy organization whose problem is to hit the books evil ; specifically , they are supposed to “ register , contain , probe and ruin ” freak . As explicate by the picture ’s theatre director , Alex Kurtzman , Prodigium is going to be a major linking gene in any and all Dark Universe films .
4) Easter eggs to the rest of the Monster universe
The cool Easter eggs in The Mummy fall when Tom Cruise ’s character , Nick Morton , first visits Prodigium . take the air into the office we see what search like the forearm and hand of the Creature from the Black Lagoon , a vampire skull , and other thing that flicked by too quickly for me to note on one viewing . Either agency , it ’s a clean-cut sign that those characters ( the Creature and maybe Dracula ) have have already been discovered in this world — and perchance make out with .
There another Easter nut that ’s not tied into the future of this dealership but to its past . Asnoticed by Inverse , at one breaker point in the picture , Jenny ( Annabelle Wallis ) knocks out a Prodigium employee with a lucky book with a star - shaped keyhole . That book is the Book of Life from the 1999 Mummy star Brendan Fraser .
5) Mr. Hyde’s going to be a problem
You do n’t cast Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll and then fail to have him Hyde out . We see Jekyll ’s transformation doubly : The first time he manages to contain it with some sort of medicine ; later he fully transmute and has a fight with Nick . Hyde feeds on chaos and suffering , so even though Jekyll has medicine that can contain him , it ’s a fair wager that if more movies take place , we ’ll get to see the monstrous Mr. Hyde fully unleashed . That music will probably end up being important , too .
6) Cruise may be the true mummy launching this monsterverse
The big surprisal in the picture is that , at the ending , the only way to defeat the Mummy , Princess Ahmanet ( Sofia Boutella ) , is to go along with her plan . So Nick stabs himself with the witching dagger , in theory letting the evil God Set take over his human consistence . The fresh monster then kills Ahmanet , winning the Clarence Day . However , we ’re tell apart that Nick is so good inside , he ’s capable to control the evil . After rise his close friend Vail ( Jake Johnson ) , he leaves for an adventure .
In a voiceover , Jekyll and Jenny talk over Nick ’s newfangled human body , explaining that he ’s an undefinable mix of teras and man , morose and clean , and that when the meter occur , they may need a monster to help defeat other monsters .
That ’s jolly obviously a set - up that Cruise will do back as his new monster self . However , there ’s no veridical clearing of who he in reality is . Is he a new Mummy ? Is he just Set ? We do n’t know . We just know that he ’s probably not leaving the Dark Universe anytime shortly .

7) Frankenstein, maybe?
Watching the film with an eye towards Dark Universe teases , there was one other thing I note — it may mean nothing , but it made me wonder , so I ’m mentioning it here .
At the plane crash site , the inspector are pick up torso parts before being killed by Ahmanet . One of the severed heads appear , to me , a pot like Javier Bardem . Bardem has been cast as Frankenstein ’s fiend , so having his disembodied head show up here would n’t be the bad way to stick in his character .
The Mummy is now in house . The next Dark Universe pic scheduled for liberation is Bill Condon ’s Bride of Frankenstein , set for release February 14 , 2019 .
