The novel issue of The New Yorker feature “ The Invasion From Outer Space ” by Steven Millhauser , a thin amuse - bouche of a tale aboutalien invasion . It ’s very short — you may probably read it on your coffee break — and packs just enough of a punch to excuse its length . The first half of the story is the funny part , dealing with people ’s reaction to the tidings that aliens are going to set ashore in their town — which are entirely specify by picture to alien - invasion narratives in motion picture and television :
From the beginning we were set up , we know just what to do , for had n’t we consider it all a hundred times?-the good people of the town snuff it about their business , the suddenly interrupted TV programs , the faces in the crew front up , the minuscule girl point in the air , the oral cavity opening , the dog yapping , the traffic stopped , the shopping suitcase descend to the pavement , and there , in the sky , number nigher . . .
Of course , the alien encroachment change state out not to be like a motion-picture show at all — in fact , it ’s something entirely unlike , seemingly harmless at first but ultimately quite terrifying .
