A German museum is exhibiting a three-D - print transcript of Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh ’s ear grown from the genetic stuff of a distant congenator .
Vincent Van Gogh famously cut off his own leftfield ear during a psychotic sequence in 1888 . Now , the Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe is displaying a replica of this notable ear — one that consist of living cells grow from samples ply by Lieuwe van Gogh , the great - great - grandson of Vincent ’s chum Theo .
The two part about one - sixteenth of the same factor , include the Y - chromosome that ’s passed down the male lineage . The replica , which was generated by a 3D printer , had its cells shaped to resemble van Gogh ’s auricle as much as possible .

The ear was created by creative person Diemut Strebe who plans to display the pinna in New York next twelvemonth .
