Horrorhas been a part of human culture since the dawn of time . We ’ve always toldstories of fear , mortality , morbidity , and existential battle , perhaps as a way of dole out with their existence in our real living . It ’s easy to feel a connection to fear when you ’re a caveman ( caveperson ? ) whose entire world is out to get you . These feeling seem to beuniversal across time and culture . Monsters like vampires , werewolves , and ghoul live inevery street corner of the reality . They seem to be an inescapable part of our collective cognizance .
That being said , I ’ve never called myself a horror rooter . In fact , for most of my life I would have say the opposite . I ’ve buy the farm out of my way to actively invalidate repugnance movie , because I ’m well , scared of being scared . As a nipper , even just the commercials for The Ring and The Grudge prompted many sleepless night . I doubt I have a brave bone in my dead body . But as I wait back on the last few class of the fib that connect with me , the story I seem to write , I ’ve noticed a course . There ’s a lot of horror . I call back maybe I really love horror ? Despite ward off it for most of my grownup life . I love the creepy , the mysterious , sometimes even the morbid ( I go througha true offense phaselike the best of us ) .
Horror speaks to our primeval lizard brains in a way that many other genres ca n’t . It catch to the bowel and gives us a agency to experience the fear , tragedy , and grief that surrounds our daily sprightliness in a secure and removed way . Particularly revulsion in books , as the clobber on the big cover can get a small too real for some of us . When you think of stories that make you feel something , horror tops the tilt . It may not always be gratifying , but it is always thrilling . And horror comics ? The breadth of storytelling and pall inducing vibes is sempiternal . So as a newly self - proclaimed revulsion fan , here ’s a tilt of my 13 top bone - chilling reads certain to keep you up all dark .
